Mumbai, May 12: Equity markets extended losses into noon trade on Tuesday after opening lower with pressure building through the morning on negative cues from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East with no signs of easing while Asian peers traded mixed.

Gainers

Among the Nifty 50 gainers at midday, ONGC was the standout performer, surging 5.77% with a high of ₹299.90 and a low of ₹286.85, last trading at ₹297.20 against a previous close of ₹281.00. Hindalco touched a high of ₹1,054.60 and a low of ₹1,025.00, trading at ₹1,041.70 versus its previous close of ₹1,023.50, up 1.78%.

Eicher Motors ranged between a high of ₹7,275.50 and a low of ₹7,155.00, with its LTP at ₹7,248.00 against a previous close of ₹7,202.50, up 0.63%. Broader Markets & Sectoral Indices

In the broader markets, the Nifty Midcap 100 was down 1.24% at 60,501.35, the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined 1.61% to 18,227.50, and the Nifty Midcap 50 fell 1.15% to 17,280.10, reflecting broad selling pressure across market capitalisations.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty IT led losses with a steep 3.91% decline to 28,183.85, followed by Nifty Financial Services 25/50 which fell 1.27% to 27,721.60, Nifty Private Bank which shed 1.07% to 26,075.65, and Nifty Services Sector which dropped 1.39% to 29,501.60, underscoring the broad-based nature of the correction particularly in high-weight technology and financial counters.

Iran War

US President Donald Trump’s tweet that Iranian ceasefire was “on life support” also weighed on investor sentiment after Tehran dismissed American peace offer overnight on Monday, stating disagreement over America lifting naval blockade, selling oil and stopping aggression on all fronts including Lebanon among others. Strait of Hormuz through which nearly one-fifth of world’s oil and gas is transported remained shut to routine shipping.

Oil Prices

Crude prices remained above $100 a barrel with Brent crude futures gaining 0.29% at $104.51 per barrel and US West Texas Intermediate crude rising 0.32% to $98.38, adding to both contracts’ near 2.8% jump in the previous session. High crude prices continued to worry investors as it will inflate India’s import bill and weigh on forex reserves and current account deficit.

Asian Markets

Asian markets were trading mixed with Shanghai Composite Index down 0.43% at 4,206.66 and ASX All Ordinaries losing 0.37% to 8,909.60 at noon, while Nikkei 225 was trading higher by 0.52% at 62,742.57. Hang Seng Index traded barely 0.02% lower at 26,401.47 as markets traded largely range-bound and directionless through the morning.

Morning Trade

The Sensex traded lower by 491.50 points or 0.65% to 75,523.78 and the Nifty 50 traded down by 163.10 points or 0.68% to 23,652.75 at 9: 25 am after opening in negative territory on Tuesday. Technology stocks led the laggards as investors remained cautious over prolonged geopolitical tensions in the Middle East while trade worries continue to linger and awaited global cues.
