Mumbai, November 5: The Sensex and the Nifty 50 surged on Thursday, extending a five-session rally, with the BSE Sensex at 78,569.43 at 9.33 am, up 1,268.03 points or 1.64 per cent. The NSE Nifty 50 was at 24,310.60 at 9.34 am, higher by 350 points or 1.46 per cent.
Both benchmarks opened with sharp gains, with the Sensex above 78,500 and the Nifty above 24,300. From Friday’s closing levels, the Sensex has added 4,109.90 points, or 5.52 per cent, and the Nifty 1,257.50 points, or 5.45 per cent, in four sessions.
Oil is the first support. Brent crude was at USD 94.09 a barrel, down 0.56 per cent, about 20 per cent below Friday’s six-month high of USD 118. Lower crude eases pressure on India’s import bill and inflation.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 1,569.40 points, or 3.03 per cent, on Wednesday, while the S&P 500 gained 1.58 per cent and the Nasdaq 1.44 per cent. The VIX fell 20.26 per cent to 16.61.
Investors are hopeful that a Democratic Congress, with control of both the Senate and the House, can push President Donald Trump to act on Iran and end the war. Sources close to Gulf governments told Reuters that a weakened Trump has a greater incentive to seek a deal and that a full-scale assault on Iran now looks less likely.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought domestic equities worth Rs 7,284 crore on Wednesday, marking their fourth consecutive session of net purchases, according to provisional exchange data. Asian cues are mixed, with the Hang Seng up 3.29 per cent and the Kospi down 3.30 per cent.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng jumped 3.29 per cent to 24,706.84, Australia’s ASX 200 rose 1.86 per cent to 8,998.70, New Zealand’s NZX 50 gained 1.95 per cent to 14,051.90, Singapore’s Straits Times rose 0.51 per cent to 5,295.36 and Shenzhen added 2.13 per cent to 11,577.22. South Korea’s Kospi fell 3.30 per cent to 5,496.31, Taiwan lost 1.50 per cent to 42,306.21 and Japan’s Nikkei slipped 0.44 per cent to 61,913.51.
Wall Street surged on Wednesday after Democrats won control of Congress. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 1,569.40 points, or 3.03 per cent, to 53,356.12, the S&P 500 gained 1.58 per cent to 7,688.62 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.44 per cent to 25,736.51. The Russell 2000 rose 1.58 per cent, the Nasdaq 100 gained 0.91 per cent and the VIX fell 20.26 per cent to 16.61.
Iran War
The war on Iran, which began with US-Israeli strikes on February 28, spread across the region as Tehran fired missiles and drones at Gulf targets and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global energy supplies. The US-Israeli campaign badly damaged Iran’s military capabilities but failed to deliver a decisive outcome, leaving the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme unresolved. Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has warned against any inclination towards submission, and two senior Iranian sources said Tehran remains on high alert for a possible US strike. China is stepping up efforts to broker a settlement, and a Hezbollah official said the chances of escalation and de-escalation may be equal, while Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis have stepped up attacks on Saudi Arabia.
US Midterms & Trump
Democrats seized control of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections, as voters weary of the war and hit by soaring fuel prices delivered a rebuke to Trump, a week after Israeli voters dealt a blow to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose bloc won 53 of the Knesset’s 120 seats. A Democratic Congress is able to constrain his military options, which gives a weakened president a stronger incentive to seek a negotiated exit.
Once seated in January, Democrats are expected to use their power to investigate the administration and demand concessions on major legislation. Gulf analysts warned, however, that a defeated Trump could also be tempted to escalate, and that a deal letting Iran claim victory could provoke recklessness as readily as restraint.
Indian Markets on Wednesday
The Sensex rose 383.55 points, or 0.50 per cent, to 77,301.40, while the Nifty 50 gained 149.75 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 23,960.60, a fifth straight gain and the longest winning streak in nearly five months. Breadth was positive, with 2,948 shares advancing, 1,260 declining and 170 unchanged, and the Nifty Midcap index rose 1.3 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap index 2 per cent. Nifty Media surged about 5 per cent, Nifty Metal and Nifty Realty gained about 2 per cent each, and Nifty IT fell about 1.5 per cent. Bharat Electronics, Titan, Adani Enterprises, Jio Financial Services and Max Healthcare led the Nifty gainers, while TCS, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Coal India and BSE Limited were the major laggards, with the political shift in Washington also seen influencing trade negotiations between the US and India.
