Mumbai, May 21: Indian equity markets opened Thursday on a broad-based positive note, with three sectors defence, metals and automobiles emerging as the clearest areas of strength as investors rotated into high-conviction themes on the back of Trump’s pause on Iran strikes, elevated commodity prices and improving domestic demand sentiment.
Defence
The Nifty India Defence index was among the sharpest sectoral movers on Thursday, rising 1.62% to 9,136.35, as the sector attracted strong buying interest on the dual tailwind of geopolitical relevance and robust order-book momentum.
- Mtar Technologies led the entire defence pack, surging 4.73% to ₹7,810 from its previous close of ₹7,457 touching a fresh 52-week high of ₹7,918 on heavy volume of nearly 19 lakh shares worth ₹1,474 crore, reflecting significant institutional participation.
- Paras Defence gained 4.83% to ₹798.65 from ₹761.85, while Data Patterns rose 2.30% to ₹3,922.20 from ₹3,834.10 and Astra Microwave advanced 2.32% to ₹1,180.90 from ₹1,154.10.
- BEL, the index heavyweight, gained 2.07% to ₹421.85 from ₹413.30 on volume of over 1.02 crore shares worth ₹432 crore confirming that the buying was broad-based and not confined to the smaller names.
With the US-Iran ceasefire remaining fragile and India’s indigenisation push accelerating, defence stocks are attracting a sustained re-rating that shows little sign of fatigue.
Metals
The Nifty Metal index gained 0.71% to 13,280.30, driven by a strong showing across aluminium, copper and steel names as elevated global commodity prices underpinned by the Strait of Hormuz disruption kept the supply-side premium in place.
- Hindalco continued its week-long surge, rising 1.65% to ₹1,103.40 from ₹1,085.50 and touching a fresh 52-week high of ₹1,110.90 a move that has now taken the stock up nearly 80% over the past year.
- Welcorp jumped 2.48% to ₹1,349.30 from ₹1,316.70, while National Aluminium gained 1.34% to ₹407.80 from ₹402.40 and Hindustan Copper rose 1.33% to ₹562 from ₹554.60.
- Tata Steel added 1.13% to ₹209.35 from ₹207.01, recovering sharply from Wednesday’s session where it had been one of the index’s bigger laggards, as global steel sentiment improved on signs of stabilising demand from China.
JSW Steel was a minor outlier, slipping 0.24% to ₹1,280.10, but the broader metal index’s upward trajectory remained intact.
Automobiles
The Nifty Auto index was up 0.35% to 26,005.35, with gains concentrated in two-wheeler and auto ancillary names even as the passenger vehicle segment showed mixed performance.
- Motherson Sumi led the pack with a sharp 3.97% surge to ₹137.42 from ₹132.17 touching its 52-week high of ₹138.07 on massive volume of 3.41 crore shares worth ₹464 crore, reflecting strong institutional buying.
- Tube Investments of India gained 2.70% to ₹3,051 from ₹2,970.90, while Bajaj Auto rose 1.22% to ₹10,590 from ₹10,462.50 and Bharat Forge advanced 1.19% to ₹1,910.60 from ₹1,888.20.
- Eicher Motors added 0.83% to ₹6,906.50 from ₹6,849.50, while Bosch was the sharpest laggard, falling 4.48% to ₹35,180 from ₹36,830 on stock-specific selling, and Mahindra & Mahindra slipped 0.61% to ₹3,103 from ₹3,122.20.
The two-wheeler segment’s outperformance points to strengthening rural and semi-urban demand that is insulated from the global macro headwinds weighing on export-linked names.
