Mumbai, April 15: BSE Sensex jumped 1,169 points to 78,017 and the Nifty 50 rallied 1.72% to 24,252 on Wednesday morning, extending gains to every major segment of the Indian equity market in a broad-based rally — from largecaps to midcaps and smallcaps — as optimism over Iran conflict acted as the catalyst for the day’s sharp reversal of Monday’s crude-driven selloff. Sectoral indexes flashed green across the board, with Nifty IT leading the gains with a 2.64% jump to 31,479, followed by Nifty Capital Markets (+3.27%), Nifty India Tourism (+3.23%), Nifty Auto (+2.13%) and Nifty Metal (+2.25%).

Stocks: Winners and Losers

Winner of the Morning So Far: IndiGo rallied 4.86%, the highest amongst Nifty 50 stocks on Wednesday, hitting an intraday high of ₹4,659 against an intraday low of ₹4,575. Stocks opened at ₹4,427 and last traded at ₹4,642, moving smartly upwards as aviation stocks popped strongly on relief over oil prices. Max Healthcare advanced 3.70% to ₹986.95 as shares traded between ₹989.20 and ₹960.00 throughout the morning session. The stock opened at ₹951.70. Hindalco added 3.25% to ₹1,010 as it moved between ₹1,038 and ₹1,002 in early trade. The counter opened at ₹978.25. Larsen & Toubro rose 3.22% to ₹4,082 as it swung between ₹4,097 and ₹4,031. The stock opened at ₹3,954.

Lagger of the Morning So Far: Dr Reddy’s Laboratories declined 1.81%, the worst performer in the Nifty 50 on Wednesday. Shares of the pharma stock fell to ₹1,195.40, against an intra-day high of ₹1,221. Dr Reddy’s opened at ₹1,235.90 and last traded at ₹1,213.50. ICICI Bank fell marginally by 0.05% to ₹1,349.20 as it moved between ₹1,364.80 and ₹1,346.00. The stock opened at ₹1,351.10.

Sectoral Indices

Sectorally, Nifty IT jumped the highest by 2.64%, followed by Nifty Capital Markets (+3.27%), Nifty India Tourism (+3.23%), Nifty Auto (+2.13%) and Nifty Metal (+2.25%), suggesting markets think Iran de-escalation is bullish especially for travel, brokerage and commodity stocks.
Sectoral losers were few and far between, with Nifty Pharma edging up just 0.91%, Nifty CPSE banking only on a 0.66% gain. India VIX tanked 9.59% to 18.53.

At the broader market level, Wednesday’s rally proved to be a large-cap, midcap and smallcap story. Nifty Next 50 rallied 2.15% to 68,565, while the Nifty Midcap 100 rose 2.07% to 58,703, the Nifty Smallcap 100 advanced 2.18% to 17,127 and the Nifty Midcap Select gained 2.15% to 13,555.

Global Cues

Wednesday’s powerful rally in Indian markets was anchored in diplomatic developments from the Middle East, as US President Trump signalled that Iran peace talks could resume in Pakistan imminently, sending crude oil prices lower for a second consecutive day — Brent sliding to $94.27 and WTI to $90.24 — directly easing the inflationary concerns that had hammered Indian equities earlier in the week. The dramatic 9.59% crash in India VIX to 18.53 alongside surging equities captured precisely how swiftly investor fear evaporated once the prospect of a diplomatic resolution emerged.

On April 13, Sensex had collapsed over 700 points to 76,847 and the Nifty 50 slumped 208 points to 23,842, as crude prices zoomed past $100 a barrel and the rupee depreciated sharply against the dollar, sparking a large-caps to small-caps sell-off on Dalal Street.
