Orient Electric Limited is an Indian electrical equipment and home appliances company engaged in the manufacturing and sale of fans, lighting products, home appliances, and switchgears. The company has its roots dating back to 1939 when Orient Paper Mills Ltd was incorporated in Brajrajnagar, Orissa, with a single paper machine. The real turning point came in 1954 when the CK Birla Group acquired the fan business from Calcutta Electrical Manufacturing Company. For decades, the company operated as a division of Orient Paper & Industries Ltd (OPIL), establishing itself as a one-stop provider of fans, lighting, home appliances, switchgears, and other electrical solutions. The company was incorporated as a public limited company on October 10, 2016, and was a subsidiary of OPIL until its demerger. A Scheme of Arrangement was filed with the National Company Law Tribunal to demerge the Consumer Electric Business of OPIL by transferring the same on a going concern basis to the company effective March 1, 2017. Pursuant to the Scheme of Arrangement, post-demerger, the company ceased to be a subsidiary of OPIL. The company has its registered office in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, and corporate offices in New Delhi. Presently, it has manufacturing facilities at Faridabad, Noida, and Kolkata, with exports to over 30 international markets.
Orient Electric operates in the Indian consumer durables and electrical equipment industry. Globally, the electrical equipment market continues to expand driven by urbanization, infrastructure development, and rising demand for energy-efficient products. In India, the consumer durables market is one of the fastest-growing segments, supported by rising middle-class income, nuclear families, and increasing penetration in Tier 2–3 cities. The Indian electrical equipment market size was valued at USD 32.1 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 68.9 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 10.0% from 2025 to 2032. The Indian fans market is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 7% over the next five years, with the premium segment (BLDC fans priced above ₹3,000) growing at over 20% annually. The lighting market in India was valued at USD 3.5 billion in 2024 and is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 9.5% to reach USD 5.9 billion by 2030. LED lighting penetration has increased significantly, currently accounting for approximately 70-75% of the lighting market. Key growth drivers include rising disposable incomes, increasing electrification, government initiatives such as the Smart Cities Mission and Housing for All scheme, and the shift towards energy-efficient products (BLDC fans, LED lights, inverter appliances). The industry faces challenges including raw material price volatility, intense competition from organized and unorganized players, and high import dependency for certain components.
