Non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) provide financial services similar to banks, offering loans, investments, and other financial products, regulated by the Reserve Bank of India. NBFCs witnessed a robust year in FY2025 and grew faster than traditional banks in lending activity, recording a credit growth of 20 per cent, much higher than the 12 per cent growth seen in the banking sector. The overall size of the NBFC sector grew significantly, with total assets increasing by 20 per cent year-on-year to Rs 28.2 trillion. Total NBFC credit reached Rs 48 trillion in FY25 and is projected to grow to Rs 74-77 trillion by FY28, suggesting a CAGR of 15-17 per cent, which is higher than the historical range of 11-13 per cent. NBFCs increased their share in the overall small business loan portfolio to 28 per cent as of December 2025, up from 26.8 per cent a year earlier. Fintech NBFCs grew by 34.9 per cent year-on-year as of June 2025 to Rs 2.1 trillion, significantly outpacing the overall NBFC industry growth of 24.5 per cent. However, the industry faces challenges including asset quality concerns, regulatory changes, intense competition, and macroeconomic headwinds. The MFI segment saw a sharp 95 per cent decline in profits due to high levels of stress and increased provisioning. The NBFC industry outlook remains positive, supported by sustained credit demand, expanding retail lending, and government initiatives promoting financial inclusion.
