Mumbai, October 30: Sensex and Nifty 50 ticked higher on Friday as investors rotated to IT stocks amid an AI selloff in Asia. Earnings also aided gains which were capped by Brent crude hovering above $116 per barrel.
At 9.56 am, the BSE Sensex was at 74,286.66, up 135.62 points or 0.18 per cent from its previous close of 74,151.04. The 30-share index had ended 905.01 points higher on Thursday.
At 9.58 am, the NSE Nifty 50 was at 22,972.85, higher by 36.10 points or 0.16 per cent from its previous close of 22,936.75. The index opened at 22,964.50 against its previous close and swung between a low of 22,923.80, below its previous close, and a high of 22,976.60, as per NSE data, reflecting the choppy start to the session.
Sentiment was lifted by corporate earnings and the ECB and BoJ decisions to keep rates unchanged. The pause came after the US Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.75 to 4 per cent earlier this week. The cues added to the optimism left by Thursday’s 1.24 per cent surge in the Sensex.
On the downside, Asian stocks fell on Friday morning, dragged by a Wall Street tech sell-off after disappointing quarterly earnings from Alphabet, Amazon and Intel. South Korea’s Kospi dropped 5.01 per cent to 5,640.46, Japan’s Nikkei fell 2.58 per cent to 62,993.86 and Taiwan’s benchmark lost 3.03 per cent to 44,962.42.
India VIX, the fear gauge, rose 2.86 per cent to 15.55 from its previous close of 15.12. Asian stocks fell on Friday morning as a Wall Street tech sell-off, sparked by disappointing quarterly earnings from Alphabet, Amazon and Intel, intensified investor doubts over high valuations and heavy cash burn. Middle East Conflict
US President Donald Trump said Vice President JD Vance’s outreach to Iran was about helping the country get medical supplies, after US media reported that Vance had written to Iranian Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei to revive peace talks, though Trump denied directing the move. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that Tehran has received the letter but has not responded, adding that Iran wants the US to meet its conditions. Parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said progress is possible only if Iran’s seven conditions are met, which include lifting the US blockade on Iranian ports, lifting sanctions on Iranian oil exports and ending hostilities on all regional fronts before the Strait of Hormuz is reopened. The Wall Street Journal also reported that Admiral Brad Cooper, the senior US military officer overseeing the Middle East, met Trump at the White House on Thursday to outline military options in Iran, a report Reuters could not independently verify.
Thursday’s Close
The BSE Sensex surged 905.01 points or 1.24 per cent to close at 74,151.04, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 237.90 points or 1.05 per cent to settle at 22,936.75, reclaiming the 22,900 mark after falling in six of the previous eight sessions. Market breadth was positive, with 2,443 stocks advancing, 1,615 declining and 127 unchanged, and the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices gained about 1 per cent each. Adani Ports rose 6.3 per cent to a near four-month high after higher quarterly profit, Adani Enterprises advanced 5.2 per cent, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Eternal were also among the top gainers, Power Grid gained 3.4 per cent and NTPC added 2.2 per cent, while Trent, Bajaj Auto, Maruti Suzuki, SBI Life Insurance and Hindalco Industries were among the key laggards. Most sectoral indices ended higher, with auto the exception, as the US Federal Reserve’s decision to hold rates at 3.75 to 4 per cent and upbeat earnings outweighed concerns over elevated crude prices.
