Mumbai, Sept 2: Indian equity benchmarks opened sharply lower on Wednesday, extending Tuesday’s losses, after the United States launched a fresh wave of airstrikes on Iranian targets overnight and Tehran retaliated against American assets across the Gulf. The escalation, the most serious in the six-month conflict in weeks, sent risk sentiment lower across global markets and triggered a broad sell-off on Dalal Street within minutes of the opening bell.
The renewed hostilities threaten further disruption to crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway that normally carries about one in every five barrels of the world’s oil and which Iran has effectively closed to shipping since the weekend. Oil prices had already surged more than four dollars a barrel on Tuesday to a five-week high, and the prospect of a prolonged Gulf standoff kept crude elevated on Wednesday, adding to input-cost worries for oil-import-dependent India.
Sentiment was compounded by a weak handover from overseas markets. Wall Street closed lower across the board on Tuesday, while Asian bourses extended the decline on Wednesday morning led by a sharp fall in Japan’s Nikkei. The combination of geopolitical risk, firming crude and a soft global cues set the tone for a weak opening in Indian equities. At 9:20 am IST, the Nifty 50 was trading at 23,820.50, down 235.30 points or 0.98 per cent, while the Sensex (BSE SENSEX) stood at 76,231.11, down 713.17 points or 0.93 per cent, as of 9:21 am IST, with losses visible across nearly every sector.

Gainers & Losers

Advances were scarce in early trade, with only four Nifty constituents trading in the green. Coal India (COALINDIA) led the gainers, rising to Rs 418.25 from Tuesday’s close of Rs 401.60, up 4.15 per cent. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (SUNPHARMA) advanced to Rs 1,935 from Rs 1,929, up 0.31 per cent, while Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) gained to Rs 237.15 from Rs 236.45, up 0.30 per cent. Larsen & Toubro (LT) edged up to Rs 3,984.30 from Rs 3,980.10, up 0.11 per cent.

On the losing side, Infosys (INFY) was the steepest laggard among Nifty stocks, falling to Rs 1,123.80 from Rs 1,156, down 2.79 per cent. Eicher Motors (EICHERMOT) dropped to Rs 7,770.50 from Rs 7,970, down 2.50 per cent, Shriram Finance (SHRIRAMFIN) slipped to Rs 1,035 from Rs 1,059.10, down 2.28 per cent, Wipro (WIPRO) declined to Rs 177.60 from Rs 181.70, down 2.26 per cent, and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) fell to Rs 3,188.80 from Rs 3,259, down 2.15 per cent.

Broad Market & Sectoral Indices

Weakness was broad-based across the market-capitalisation spectrum. Among broader indices, the Nifty Next 50 declined 1.22 per cent to 71,983.05, the Nifty Midcap 100 fell 1.15 per cent to 62,604.10, and the Nifty Bank slipped 0.90 per cent to 56,891.35. Sectorally, the Nifty IT index was the worst hit among the pack, down 1.82 per cent to 30,924.60, followed by the Nifty Realty index, which fell 1.78 per cent to 875.40, and the Nifty Auto index, down 1.71 per cent to 28,002.95.

Asian Markets

Asian equities were broadly weaker on Wednesday morning as the region reacted to the overnight escalation between Washington and Tehran. Japan’s Nikkei 225 led the declines, sliding 2.63 per cent to 64,473.16, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dropped 1.12 per cent to 25,045.67 and Malaysia’s FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI fell 1.42 per cent to 1,701.43. Not every market was in the red, however, with Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite bucking the regional trend to rise 1.14 per cent to 6,599.94.

US Markets

Wall Street ended lower on Tuesday as the Iran conflict and firming oil prices weighed on investor sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.79 per cent, or 419.02 points, to 52,766.88, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.03 per cent to 26,099.77. The S&P 500 shed 0.71 per cent to close at 7,631.47.

Oil Prices

Crude oil remained elevated after Tuesday’s sharp rally to a five-week high, with markets on edge over the risk of a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude was last at 95.55 dollars a barrel, up 0.95 per cent, while WTI crude traded at 90.88 dollars, up 0.73 per cent. The gains held even as traders weighed the possibility of further supply disruption following Monday’s attacks on tankers leaving the strait.

Iran War Update

The United States launched a barrage of airstrikes against Iranian military targets on Tuesday, and Tehran responded with missile and drone strikes on American assets in Jordan, Bahrain and Iraq, marking the sharpest escalation of the six-month conflict in weeks. The strikes followed a weekend exchange of fire and Monday’s attacks on two tankers leaving the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively closed to shipping. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps said the American strikes would only tighten its grip on the waterway, while President Donald Trump warned of a further, heavier strike should Tehran continue to retaliate. Iran’s Red Crescent reported five people killed and dozens wounded in a strike near the coastal area of Sirik, though there was no immediate American comment on the reports.

Indian Markets on Tuesday

Indian benchmarks had ended marginally lower on Tuesday despite stronger-than-expected economic growth data, with the Sensex slipping 12.99 points, or 0.02 per cent, to 76,944.28 and the Nifty declining 24.60 points, or 0.10 per cent, to 24,055.80. Losses in pharmaceutical, banking, auto and realty stocks offset gains in information technology and FMCG shares, even as India’s economy expanded 7.8 per cent year-on-year in the April-June quarter. Market breadth remained weak through the session, with 1,668 stocks advancing against 2,467 declining and 190 ending unchanged.
