Mumbai, July 12: At a Chintan Shivir organised by the Department of Commerce at Bharat Mandapam, the government has set its sights on USD 150 billion worth of electronics exports by 2030. Members of the government and industry met to discuss export-oriented policy-making. Several listed stocks were named as participants at the event.
Here is a fact-based, sector-wise rundown of stocks and companies mentioned at the shivir, and the possible implications of any discussions for these businesses.
Listed EMS companies mentioned as attendees
Three companies confirmed to have attended the event are listed on Indian stock exchanges and operate directly in the electronics manufacturing services sector that the roadmap seeks to boost.
- Dixon Technologies: Mentioned as an attendee. Among the named stocks, Dixon has operations spanning beyond mobile phone assembly into IT hardware and industrial electronics segments – both opportunities for exports mentioned at the shivir’s presentations.
- Amber Enterprises: Mentioned as an attendee. Among named companies, Amber’s footprint connects it most directly to presentations on rationalising incentives for exports-oriented manufacturing separately from incentives linked to domestic demand creation.
- Syrma SGS Technology: Mentioned as an attendee. Among names specifically mentioned, Syrma SGS Technology’s current business exposure to components and specialty electronics aligns most directly with the sector specific export boosting opportunities discussed at the session.
Other companies mentioned at the shivir
Global manufacturers as well as large, unlisted Indian companies also attended the shivir. While these aren’t listed names on Indian exchanges, their attendance was mentioned by the Department of Commerce and understood by attendees as demonstrating the Electronics Export Push: The Stocks Mentioned at the Shivr fullness of electronics manufacturing and exporting ecosystem the government is consulting with.
- Apple and Samsung: Trade on exchanges outside of India. Apple and Samsung, two of the biggest players in the global smartphones supply chain, were specifically mentioned as attending the shivir. Both are central to maps of the global value chain that were discussed at the event.
- Foxconn: Does not trade on Indian exchanges, but is listed in Taiwan. A contract manufacturer present in India with large-scale manufacturing operations.
- Tata Electronics: Unlisted. Part of the Tata group conglomerate.
- Micromax, boAt, Bora Exim and Aequs: Unlisted. Separately, boAt has discussed plans to go public, so investors watching this stock may find any read-through from policy announcements relevant to that discussion.
Read-across to adjacent sectors
The presentations made at the shivir touched on a number of sectors not directly related to any named stocks.
- Semiconductor and electronics components ecosystem: Discussions around strengthening this supply chain are positive read-across for capital goods and specialty chemicals companies that provide fab-adjacent inputs, gases, and testing equipment.
- MSME suppliers: Discussion on integrating MSMEs into global value chains bodes well for smaller component, connector and PCB manufacturers that supply bigger EMS companies.
- Logistics and customs: Alignment of HS codes and better coordination with Customs authorities was mentioned as an area for improvement. Positive read across for export logistics and freight-forwarding companies.
What to expect, and not expect, going forward
Since a Chintan Shivir is a meeting of stakeholders for the purpose of consultation, mentions of companies at the shivir do not represent specific policies. After the conclusion of the Open House style discussions on Saturday, the Department of Commerce only announced that the two sides “committed themselves to continued structured consultations”. That means investors watching these names should monitor DGFT and Commerce Ministry announcements for formal notifications, changes to incentive schemes or updates to HS codes as the conversations progressed by the government.
