Mumbai, May 22: Gold prices in India edged lower on Friday, snapping a three-session winning streak as profit-taking emerged after the metal’s brisk mid-week recovery. The national price of 24-karat gold (99.9% purity) slipped to ₹1,59,490 per 10 grams, shedding ₹440 from Thursday’s ₹1,59,930.
The 22-karat rate (91.6% purity) eased to ₹1,46,200 per 10 grams, down ₹400 from Thursday’s ₹1,46,600. The 18-karat price (75% purity) declined to ₹1,19,620 per 10 grams, retreating ₹330 from Thursday’s ₹1,19,950. On a per-gram basis, 24K gold now stands at ₹15,949, 22K at ₹14,620 and 18K at ₹11,962 down ₹44, ₹40 and ₹33 respectively on the day.
Friday’s pullback is modest relative to the three-session advance that preceded it 24K had gained a cumulative ₹3,710 per 10 grams between Tuesday and Thursday and is best characterised as a routine consolidation rather than a fresh directional move. The metal remains significantly below last Wednesday’s tariff-shock peak of ₹1,67,860 per 10 grams but has stabilised well above the post-correction low of ₹1,56,220 reached on the Monday following the tariff announcement, suggesting the market has found a workable near-term range.
Globally, gold spot prices came under modest pressure from a firming US dollar and some easing of immediate geopolitical risk sentiment ahead of the weekend, though the underlying safe-haven bid tied to the Iran conflict continues to provide a floor. Retail jewellery demand, which had tentatively re-engaged during mid-week, is expected to remain cautious through the weekend as consumers continue to adapt to the structurally higher price regime created by the 15 per cent import duty.
City-Wise Gold Rates: Southern and Western India
Chennai retained its position as India’s most expensive gold market on Friday, quoting 24-karat gold at ₹1,61,240 per 10 grams, 22-karat at ₹1,47,800 and 18-karat at ₹1,24,000 each declining by ₹430, ₹300 and ₹250 respectively from Thursday’s levels, with the premium over the national benchmark narrowing marginally to reflect the slightly sharper correction in southern markets.
Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune were all uniformly pegged at the national benchmark of ₹1,59,490 for 24-karat, ₹1,46,200 for 22-karat and ₹1,19,620 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams, with each declining by the standard ₹440, ₹400 and ₹330 from Thursday’s close.
Delhi quoted 24-karat gold at ₹1,59,640 per 10 grams, 22-karat at ₹1,46,250 and 18-karat at ₹1,19,670 on Friday, each falling ₹590, ₹500 and ₹430 respectively from Thursday a slightly steeper decline than the national benchmark that may reflect localised profit-booking by Delhi’s more active institutional trading community.
Vadodara and Ahmedabad were quoted at ₹1,59,540 for 24-karat, ₹1,46,250 for 22-karat and ₹1,19,670 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams, each declining ₹590, ₹400 and ₹330 from Thursday respectively. Friday’s pattern of broadly uniform but slightly varied city-wise declines is consistent with end-of-week profit-taking rather than any fundamental shift in market direction.
