Mumbai, May 25:Gold prices in India slipped marginally on Monday, extending Friday’s modest correction as the fourth consecutive fuel price hike over the weekend added to inflationary concerns and dampened risk appetite.

The national price of 24-karat gold (99.9% purity) eased to ₹1,59,380 per 10 grams, shedding ₹110 from Friday’s ₹1,59,490. The 22-karat rate (91.6% purity) declined to ₹1,46,100 per 10 grams, down ₹100 from Friday’s ₹1,46,200. The 18-karat price (75% purity) slipped to ₹1,19,540 per 10 grams, retreating ₹80 from Friday’s ₹1,19,620. On a per-gram basis, 24K gold stands at ₹15,938, 22K at ₹14,610 and 18K at ₹11,954 down ₹11, ₹10 and ₹8 respectively against Friday’s close, though up ₹32, ₹30 and ₹25 against the weekend reference rate.

Monday’s marginal decline keeps gold firmly within the narrow consolidation range it has established since the end of last week’s three-session recovery, which had clawed back ₹3,710 per 10 grams in 24K following the steep post-tariff correction. The metal remains well supported above the post-correction low of ₹1,56,220 set on the Monday after the government announced the import duty hike to 15 per cent, and the daily moves have become progressively smaller as the market finds equilibrium.

Globally, gold spot prices held broadly steady, with geopolitical uncertainty around the West Asia conflict continuing to provide a floor while a firmer US dollar and some profit-taking at higher levels capped the upside. The weekend’s fourth consecutive fuel price hike which took the cumulative increase since May 15 to nearly ₹7.40 per litre for both petrol and diesel adds a fresh inflationary dimension to the domestic macro picture, and could renew safe-haven interest in gold if the consumer price index data due later this month comes in above expectations.

City-Wise Gold Rates: Southern and Western India

Chennai held its position as the most expensive gold market among India’s major cities on Monday, quoting 24-karat gold at ₹1,61,240 per 10 grams, 22-karat at ₹1,47,800 and 18-karat at ₹1,24,000 unchanged from Friday’s levels, suggesting that Chennai’s localised demand remained resilient through the weekend and the city’s bullion associations held their rates steady. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune were all uniformly pegged at the national benchmark of ₹1,59,380 for 24-karat, ₹1,46,100 for 22-karat and ₹1,19,540 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams, each declining by the standard ₹110, ₹100 and ₹80 respectively from Friday.

Delhi quoted 24-karat gold at ₹1,59,530 per 10 grams, 22-karat at ₹1,46,250 and 18-karat at ₹1,19,640 on Monday a marginal premium above the national benchmark consistent with the capital’s higher dealer margins, with 24K and 18K each down ₹110 and ₹30 from Friday respectively while 22K held flat. Vadodara and Ahmedabad were both quoted at ₹1,59,430 for 24-karat, ₹1,46,150 for 22-karat and ₹1,19,590 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams, each declining by ₹110, ₹100 and ₹80 from Friday in line with the national benchmark cities. Across all cities except Chennai, Monday’s pattern of marginal, uniform declines points to a market that is consolidating in a narrow range rather than breaking in any clear directional manner.
