Mumbai, August 19: Petrol and diesel rates remained mixed across major Indian cities, with fuel prices unchanged in New Delhi and Kolkata, while Mumbai and Chennai witnessed notable increases in both petrol and diesel rates. Petrol prices rose by as much as Rs 1.69 per litre across the listed cities, while diesel prices climbed up to Rs 1.71 per litre. On the other hand, fuel prices declined in Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram. Petrol was priced at Rs 102.12 per litre in New Delhi, Rs 112.40 in Mumbai, Rs 109.45 in Chennai and Rs 111.37 in Bengaluru, while diesel rates stood at Rs 95.20, Rs 99.03, Rs 101.26 and Rs 99.25 per litre, respectively. Hyderabad continued to record among the highest fuel prices, with petrol at Rs 115.73 per litre and diesel at Rs 103.82 per litre. Fuel prices vary across states and cities due to differences in local taxes, VAT and other pricing components.
Oil prices climbed for a fourth consecutive session on Wednesday as uncertainty over the status of the Strait of Hormuz kept investors on edge and raised concerns over disruptions to global crude supplies. Brent crude futures rose 0.8% to $91.8 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude gained 0.9% to $85.7 a barrel. Both benchmarks settled at their highest levels since July 24 in the previous session.
The latest gains came as conflicting statements from Washington and Tehran added to uncertainty over the crucial shipping route. US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that no talks were underway with Iran and insisted that the Strait of Hormuz was open, while Iran maintained that the waterway remained closed to shipping. The temporary ceasefire between the two sides expired on Monday, further weakening hopes of a near-term diplomatic breakthrough.
The Strait of Hormuz remains critical to global energy markets, with the disruption to shipping prompting companies to seek alternative routes. Iraq has approved mechanisms to export crude through multiple outlets and via international and local companies, with contracts under the new arrangement set to begin on September 1. Meanwhile, two major Chinese shipping companies have stopped sending oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb strait, instead collecting crude cargoes outside the Gulf.
Market participants are also awaiting fresh US inventory data for clues on the near-term balance between supply and demand. Industry data showed US crude and distillate inventories declined last week, while gasoline stocks increased. Analysts polled by Reuters expect official Energy Information Administration data to show US crude inventories fell by around 600,000 barrels in the week ended August 14.
The sustained rise in crude prices adds to concerns for major oil-importing economies such as India, where higher energy costs can widen the import bill, pressure the rupee and complicate the inflation outlook. For Indian equities, a prolonged period of crude prices above $90 a barrel could weigh on sentiment and raise concerns over margins in oil-consuming sectors, while benefiting upstream energy producers.
