SAIL Approves Rs 31,000 Crore Bhilai Steel Plant Expansion to 10.2 MTPA

New Delhi: Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has given in-principle nod for capacity expansion of its flagship unit — Bhilai Steel Plant, from 6.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 10.2 MTPA, at an estimated cost of Rs 31,000 crore, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa, Minister of State for Steel, in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, said the project has the potential to generate direct and indirect employment during the construction and operational phases.

All major raw materials will be sourced from SAIL’s captive mines and domestic and imported sources, he said.

“The project completion timeline is 42 months,” the minister added.

Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) is the flagship unit of SAIL.

Located in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, BSP is known for its integrated steel production facilities, technological advancements, and contribution to the nation’s infrastructure development.

BSP is the exclusive supplier of rails to Indian Railways, producing a range of rail products to meet diverse requirements.

Notably, the plant manufactures the world’s longest single-piece rails, measuring 130 meters, at its Universal Rail Mill (URM). The plant produces a variety of heavy structural steel products, including beams. BSP’s product range also includes plates and sheets.
