New Delhi, Nov 5: Silver prices rose to Rs 2,100 per 10 grams on Thursday, according to Goodreturns.in. That is Rs 100, or 5 per cent, higher than Wednesday’s rate of Rs 2,000 per 10 grams. The new rate works out to Rs 210 per gram and Rs 21,000 per 100 grams, while one kilogram of silver costs Rs 2,10,000, against Rs 2,00,000 a day earlier. The rate is the same in all 10 major cities tracked, from Chennai to Ahmedabad. These are bullion rates and do not include taxes or making charges.

Silver prices in India are linked to international prices, which can move in either direction, and local dealers adjust their rates accordingly. Wednesday’s city-wise listings showed silver at Rs 2,00,000 per kilogram, so today’s rate is Rs 10,000 higher per kilogram than in the previous session. The rise also ends a flat spell, as Wednesday was the third straight session at Rs 2,000 per 10 grams.

Several factors move the rate from day to day, including international silver prices, the rupee and expectations for US interest rates.

For a buyer of 10 grams, the price is Rs 2,100 before taxes, which is Rs 100 more than the Rs 2,000 a buyer paid on Wednesday. A purchase of 20 grams costs Rs 4,200 against Rs 4,000 on Wednesday, and 50 grams costs Rs 10,500 against Rs 10,000. Anyone buying 100 grams will pay Rs 21,000, up from Rs 20,000.

On a per-gram basis, silver is at Rs 210, up Rs 10 from Wednesday’s Rs 200. For bulk buyers, one kilogram costs Rs 2,10,000, and the same rate applies in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kerala, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad as well as Chennai. A 5-kilogram purchase would cost Rs 10,50,000 at today’s rate, which is Rs 50,000 more than it would have on Wednesday.

Silverware and jewellery will cost more once making charges and 3% GST are added. GST alone comes to about ₹6.30 on one gram of silver, ₹63 on 10 grams, ₹630 on 100 grams and ₹6,300 on a kilogram. Including GST, 10 grams of silver comes to about ₹2,163 today, against ₹2,060 on Wednesday.

With Dhanteras and Diwali only days away, silver coins, bars and utensils are traditional purchases at this time of year. At today’s rate, a 50-gram silver coin or bar costs ₹10,500 before making charges and GST. Shoppers who bought the same coin on Wednesday paid ₹10,000, so the wait has cost them ₹500.

Senco Gold was clearly the strongest, and the only one of the four to beat the Nifty 50. It opened at ₹319.40 against a previous close of ₹311.25, 2.62 per cent higher, a reversal from Wednesday, when it opened below its previous close. It held above a low of ₹316.00, 1.53 per cent over the previous close, and touched a high of ₹323.05, 3.79 per cent above it. It is trading at ₹320.10, up ₹8.85 or 2.84 per cent, just below its volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of ₹320.50.

PN Gadgil Jewellers opened at ₹588.10, 1.12 per cent above Wednesday’s close of ₹581.60. On Wednesday the stock slid 1.22 per cent below its previous close soon after the open, but this time it never traded below its opening price. A rally between 10:00 am and 10:30 am lifted it to a high of ₹605.35, 4.08 per cent above the previous close, and it has eased since. It is at ₹591.15, up ₹9.55 or 1.64 per cent, but below its VWAP of ₹598.43.

Silgo Retail opened higher at ₹72.68 against a previous close of ₹71.32, a gap-up of 1.91 per cent, and that opening price is also the day’s high. On Wednesday it stayed above its previous close all morning, but today it dipped to ₹70.98, 0.48 per cent below the previous close, around 10:00 am. It recovered quickly and is at ₹72.48, up ₹1.16 or 1.63 per cent, above its VWAP of ₹72.00.

Vaibhav Global closed Wednesday at ₹160.19, well above the ₹157.81 it traded at in early trade that day. It opened today at ₹164.99, up 3.00 per cent, and hit a high of ₹166.00, 3.63 per cent above the previous close, but the gains faded steadily through the morning. The stock fell to a low of ₹161.16, 0.61 per cent above the previous close. It is at ₹161.85, up ₹1.66 or 1.04 per cent, and below its VWAP of ₹163.94.

Silver rose 5 per cent on Thursday after standing still on Wednesday, yet the stocks did not move together. On Wednesday all four beat the Nifty 50, which was up only 0.13 per cent. Today, with the index up 1.77 per cent, only Senco Gold did, while PN Gadgil and Silgo fell just short and Vaibhav Global lagged well behind. With the market rallying strongly, the gains appear to owe more to the broader market than to the metal.

Order book data was weaker for the bulls. Sellers led on all four stocks, a change from Wednesday, when buyers led on Silgo Retail and Vaibhav Global. Sellers led on PN Gadgil Jewellers at 79.82 per cent, with 1,18,135 shares against 29,866 on the buy side, and on Senco Gold at 64.96 per cent, with 2,54,970 shares against 1,37,504. Silgo Retail showed sellers at 64.48 per cent, with 15,564 shares against 8,572, and Vaibhav Global at 60.97 per cent, with 1,09,753 shares against 70,248.
