New Delhi, Oct 21: Silver is priced at Rs. 2,300 for 10 grams in all 10 cities tracked by Goodreturns.in on Wednesday, which makes it Rs. 23,000 for 100 grams and Rs. 2,30,000 for a kilogram. The rate works out to Rs. 230 per gram. Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala, which were the dearer markets at Rs. 2,400 per 10 grams on Monday, have now come down to the level of the rest of the country.

Tuesday was a trade holiday on account of Dussehra, so Wednesday’s rates are being compared with Monday’s, the last working session. Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad are unchanged from Monday at Rs. 2,300 per 10 grams. Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala are down Rs. 100 from Rs. 2,400, a fall of about 4.2 per cent. In those three markets, 100 grams is Rs. 1,000 cheaper at Rs. 23,000 and a kilogram is Rs. 10,000 cheaper at Rs. 2,30,000.

The cut ends the Rs. 100 premium that the three southern markets had been charging over the rest of the country, and 10 grams of silver now costs the same in every city we track. Compared with Monday, October 12, when Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala were at Rs. 2,450 and the other cities at Rs. 2,400, the rate is Rs. 150 lower in the south, a drop of about 6.1 per cent, and Rs. 100 lower elsewhere, a drop of about 4.2 per cent.

Domestic equities were firmer after the holiday. The Nifty 50 was at 22,940.50 around 10:22 am, up 51.55 points or 0.23 per cent from Monday’s close of 22,888.95.

The change is larger over a longer stretch. The table below sets Wednesday’s rates against those of Monday, October 12, again per 10 grams.

City  Mon, Oct 12  Wed, Oct 21  Diff
Chennai  ₹2,450  ₹2,300  -₹150
Mumbai  ₹2,400  ₹2,300  -₹100

Every city is lower over the nine days. Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad are down Rs. 100 per 10 grams, while Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala are down Rs. 150.

These are rates for the metal alone. Silver jewellery costs more once making charges and 3% GST are added. On a 10 gram purchase at Rs. 2,300, the GST alone comes to Rs. 69.

With Dussehra behind us and Dhanteras and Diwali still ahead, coins, idols and utensils tend to draw buyers. A uniform rate of Rs. 2,300 per 10 grams may help demand in the southern markets, where buyers are paying Rs. 100 less than they did on Monday. The question for the next few sessions is whether Rs. 2,300 holds as a floor, or whether silver slips further after the fall seen in Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala.

Senco Gold was trading at ₹338.40, down ₹2.60 or 0.76 per cent from Monday’s close of ₹341.00. It opened flat at ₹341.00, rose to a high of ₹347.60 around 9:35 am and then gave up the gain, slipping below the previous close near 9:50 am. It touched a low of ₹338.00, has hovered close to that level since 10:00 am and is below its volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of ₹342.35.

PN Gadgil Jewellers opened at ₹595.00 against a previous close of ₹589.30, and that was the high of the day. It then slid through the morning and touched a low of ₹578.25. It is at ₹581.65, down 1.30 per cent and below its VWAP of ₹584.57.

Vaibhav Global opened at ₹205.90, flat against the previous close, and touched a high of ₹206.40 within the first few minutes. It fell in steps from there and slid to a low of ₹198.88 towards 10:20 am. It is trading at ₹199.40, down 3.16 per cent and well below its VWAP of ₹202.05.

Silgo Retail opened at ₹69.00 against a previous close of ₹68.95 and touched a high of ₹69.50 around 9:20 am. It then eased to a low of ₹68.31. It is trading at ₹68.50, down 0.65 per cent and below its VWAP of ₹69.01.

Against Monday’s morning levels reported on October 19, all four counters are lower. Senco Gold is down ₹5.75 or 1.67 per cent from ₹344.15, PN Gadgil Jewellers by ₹17.75 or 2.96 per cent from ₹599.40, Vaibhav Global by ₹8.80 or 4.23 per cent from ₹208.20 and Silgo Retail by ₹0.75 or 1.08 per cent from ₹69.25.

Silver rates fell only in three southern markets and the Nifty 50 was higher, yet none of the four jewellery counters gained. The moves do not look like a read-through from the metal or from the broader market.

Order book data showed sellers ahead on all four counters. Senco Gold had 73.39 per cent of total quantity on the sell side, with 3,27,310 shares against 1,18,692 on the buy side. PN Gadgil Jewellers was at 70.69 per cent sell, with 79,640 shares against 33,013, Vaibhav Global at 62.27 per cent, with 43,517 against 26,362, and Silgo Retail at 57.85 per cent, with 13,293 against 9,687.
