Mumbai, July 28: Vodafone Idea, PC Jeweller, Asian Granito India and Suzlon Energy were among the most actively traded stocks by volume on the NSE on Tuesday, with investors tracking company-specific developments ranging from fundraising and debt reduction to legal action and quarterly earnings. Asian Granito emerged as the standout gainer, while Suzlon Energy declined despite anticipation around its June-quarter results.
Vodafone Idea Limited (down 0.08%)
Vodafone Idea traded largely flat on Tuesday after declining in the previous three sessions, as investors weighed a report that the telecom operator may not renew 39.5 MHz of spectrum holdings across the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands in six circles.
The stock was also in focus amid concerns over the potential impact of rising network equipment costs on the company’s plans to accelerate its 5G rollout. Equipment makers are reportedly preparing to raise prices as chip and component costs increase, partly driven by a global investment surge in artificial intelligence.
Higher equipment prices could put additional pressure on Vodafone Idea’s capital expenditure at a time when the company is already racing to expand its network and narrow the gap with larger rivals that have moved ahead in 5G deployment. Any increase in the cost of network expansion could therefore make timely access to funding even more critical for the financially stressed operator.
Vodafone Idea’s proposed ₹35,000-crore debt fundraising is expected to play a crucial role in funding its expansion, with the proceeds likely to be directed towards strengthening its 4G network and accelerating 5G investments. The fundraising proposal, however, is still awaiting final approval from the company’s lending consortium, with banks reportedly seeking additional safeguards and revisions to its business plan before giving the go-ahead.
A delay in securing the funds could complicate Vodafone Idea’s efforts to ramp up capital spending, particularly if network equipment becomes more expensive. The company faces mounting pressure to improve coverage and expand 5G services as larger rivals continue to strengthen their networks, making access to fresh capital increasingly important to its ability to remain competitive.
PC Jeweller Limited (down 0.64%)
PC Jeweller shares declined on Tuesday after the stock rose in the previous session following the jewellery retailer announcing plans to seek shareholder approval for a qualified institutional placement (QIP) of up to ₹1,000 crore and the proposed reappointment of Balram Garg as managing director.
The proposals were outlined in a notice issued on Friday, after the company’s board earlier this month approved the ₹1,000-crore fundraise through the QIP. The proposed capital raising is expected to strengthen PC Jeweller’s balance sheet and support its ongoing efforts to reduce debt.
The company last week said it had reached a settlement with another lender, taking the number of banks with which it has resolved outstanding dues to five out of 14. The move is part of its broader debt restructuring efforts as it works towards settling its remaining obligations and improving its financial position.
PC Jeweller has repaid more than 90% of its outstanding bank borrowings since reaching settlements with lenders and expects to clear the remaining bank debt during the current quarter. The deleveraging progress has been accompanied by an improvement in performance, with consolidated revenue rising 21% year-on-year in the June quarter.
The proposed QIP, alongside continued repayments and lender settlements, is expected to further improve the company’s financial position. Investors will now track the progress of the fundraise and the resolution of the remaining bank dues, while monitoring whether the improvement in revenue growth can be sustained.
Asian Granito India Limited (up 12.67%)
Asian Granito India soared on Tuesday. It has risen almost 34% over a week, and nearly 11% over a month. This year it has fallen 21%. Over a year it has risen 6.6%. Asian Granito India is a tiles company.
Suzlon Energy Limited (down 2.54%)
Suzlon Energy shares declined on Tuesday ahead of the company’s June-quarter earnings announcement, with investors also tracking the latest development in its legal challenge against a ₹29-crore penalty imposed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on the company, former vice chairman Vinod R Tanti, former CFO and others for alleged financial misreporting.
The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) on Monday declined to grant immediate relief to Suzlon against the SEBI order and adjourned the matter to August 7. Suzlon had sought an unconditional stay on the penalty order, arguing that it was affecting its relationships with banks and credit rating agencies. SEBI, however, opposed the request, saying the order imposed only a monetary penalty and did not restrict the company’s operations or access to capital markets.
