Mumbai July, 22: Bharat Forge Ltd. has entered into a strategic partnership with French-Canadian aerospace company Flying Whales to jointly develop, manufacture and commercialise heavy-lift airships in India, marking its latest push into the country’s growing aerospace and defence ecosystem.

The collaboration, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), aims to establish local production of the LCA60, Flying Whales’s next-generation heavy-lift airship, for defence, strategic logistics and disaster response applications. The agreement was signed at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026.

According to the company, the partnership aligns with the Government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives and seeks to create indigenous capabilities in a niche segment of aerospace manufacturing.

The proposed airships are designed to transport cargo of up to 60 tonnes without relying on conventional runways. Equipped with vertical take-off and landing capability and hybrid-electric propulsion, they are intended to operate in remote or difficult terrain where traditional logistics solutions face limitations.

Wider Defence And Strategic Applications

Beyond manufacturing, the companies plan to explore multiple use cases for the platform, including logistics support for forward military bases, transportation of oversized equipment and defence supplies, intelligence and surveillance missions, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief operations and rapid deployment in border regions.

Bharat Forge said the partnership has the potential to create an indigenous airship ecosystem in India by combining its manufacturing capabilities with Flying Whales’s airship technology. The localisation programme is also expected to support the development of a domestic supply chain and generate high-technology employment.

Executive Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director Amit Kalyani said the collaboration represents an opportunity to build sovereign capability in a strategically important aerospace segment while opening a new avenue for India’s defence manufacturing sector.

Bharat Forge Share Price Trades Lower

Despite the strategic announcement, the stock remained under mild selling pressure during Wednesday’s session.

Bharat Forge share price was trading at ₹2,193.80, down 0.36%, as of 12:07 PM IST on July 22.

The muted market reaction suggests investors are treating the announcement as a long-term strategic initiative rather than an immediate earnings catalyst, particularly since the MoU does not disclose financial commitments or project timelines.

Company Background

Bharat Forge, the flagship company of the Kalyani Group, manufactures high-performance engineering components for the automotive, aerospace, defence, marine, railways and industrial sectors. Over the past few years, the company has expanded its defence portfolio through investments in advanced manufacturing, artillery systems, aerospace components and other strategic technologies.

Conclusion

The partnership with FLYING WHALES marks Bharat Forge’s entry into an emerging aerospace segment that has applications across defence logistics, disaster management and heavy cargo transportation. While the commercial roadmap is still evolving, the MoU reflects the company’s broader strategy of moving beyond traditional manufacturing into high-value defence and aerospace technologies.
