Mumbai, November 5: Indian equity benchmarks extended their winning streak to a sixth consecutive session on Thursday, with the Sensex surging over 2,000 points and the Nifty 50 settling above 24,500, as falling crude oil prices, sustained foreign investor buying and improving global risk sentiment fuelled a broad-based rally. The benchmarks neared three month highs on Thursday.
At close, the Sensex was up 2,008.61 points, or 2.60 percent, at 79,310.01, while the Nifty gained 576 points, or 2.40 percent, to settle at 24,536.60. Both benchmarks have advanced more than 8 percent over the past six sessions, marking their longest winning streak in a year.
Market breadth remained firmly positive, with 2,868 shares advancing, 1,384 declining and 169 remaining unchanged on the BSE. The Nifty Midcap index rose 1.4 percent, while the Nifty Smallcap index gained 1.1 percent.
Despite the sharp recovery, the benchmarks remain in the red for 2026, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex still down 6.2 percent and 6.9 percent, respectively, on a year-to-date basis.
What fuelled the rally?
Sentiment received a significant boost from the sharp correction in crude oil prices after Democrats secured control of both chambers of the US Congress in the midterm elections. The outcome raised hopes of greater political checks on US President Donald Trump’s policy decisions and a possible diplomatic resolution to the US-Israel-Iran conflict.
Brent crude futures had slumped 8.7 percent in the previous session to hit a two-month low before recovering around 1 percent to trade near $96 per barrel on Thursday. Lower oil prices are particularly positive for India, one of the world’s largest crude importers, as they can ease inflationary pressures, reduce the import bill and support the rupee.
Foreign investor buying also provided a significant tailwind. FPIs purchased Indian equities worth Rs 7,284 crore on Wednesday, their biggest single-day investment since October 2025, according to provisional exchange data. This marked their fourth consecutive session of net buying, raising hopes of a reversal in foreign fund outflows after a record $29 billion withdrawal this year.
A global rotation away from AI-related trades also supported sentiment, with concerns over tighter scrutiny of AI data centres weighing on global chip stocks and the dollar. Indian IT stocks, which often move inversely to chip stocks, benefited from the trend.
Stocks in focus
Bajaj Finance, Shriram Finance, InterGlobe Aviation, Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles were among the biggest gainers on the Nifty 50. On the other hand, Apollo Hospitals, ONGC, NTPC, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and Coal India featured among the top losers.
In the broader market, Ashok Leyland surged 10.5 percent, while UNO Minda advanced 11.5 percent. Authum Investment gained 10.4 percent and Motilal Oswal Financial Services added 8 percent.
PI Industries was among the notable midcap losers, tumbling 19 percent. Oil India declined 4 percent, while Bharat Forge fell 3.3 percent.
Oil-sensitive companies also attracted buying interest. Asian Paints gained 4.4 percent, while IndiGo advanced 5.4 percent on expectations that lower energy prices could ease operating costs. In contrast, upstream oil producers ONGC and Oil India declined 2.13% and 4% respectively as crude prices retreated.
Sectoral indices
Buying was widespread across sectors, with 14 of the 16 major sectoral indices ending higher. The Nifty Auto index led the gains, jumping nearly 4.14 percent. Realty, PSU Bank, Nifty Bank and Private Bank indices advanced around 3 percent each.
The Nifty Financial Services index rose 4 percent, while the Nifty Capital Market index gained 4.24 percent. Information technology and consumer durables stocks also attracted strong buying, with the Nifty IT and Nifty Consumer Durables indices advancing more than 2 percent each.
However, the Nifty Energy and Nifty Media indices bucked the broader market trend, ending 0.3 percent and 0.8 percent lower, respectively.
