Mumbai, November 5: Automobile, financial services and information technology stocks led a broad-based rally on Dalal Street on Thursday, as Indian equity benchmarks extended their winning streak to a sixth consecutive session. Easing crude oil prices, renewed foreign investor buying and improving global risk appetite following the US midterm election outcome lifted sentiment across most sectors.
The Nifty Auto index emerged among the top sectoral performers, jumping 4.14 percent, while the Nifty Financial Services index advanced 4 percent. The Nifty Capital Market index gained 4.24 percent, with the Nifty Realty, PSU Bank, Bank and Private Bank indices also rising around 3 percent each.
Fourteen of the 16 major sectoral indices ended higher as investors increased exposure to interest-rate-sensitive and oil-consuming businesses.
Auto stocks lead gains
Automobile stocks witnessed strong buying, with the Nifty Auto index surging 4.14 percent. Maruti Suzuki (up 5.5%) and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (up 5.5%) were among the biggest gainers on the Nifty 50, while Ashok Leyland rallied 10.5 percent.
The sharp correction in crude oil prices provided an additional tailwind for the automobile sector by raising expectations of lower input costs and easing inflationary pressures. A sustained decline in energy prices could also support consumer purchasing power and improve demand prospects.
InterGlobe Aviation, the parent of IndiGo, advanced 5.4 percent, benefiting from expectations of lower aviation turbine fuel costs.
Financial stocks, banks rally
Financial stocks were among the biggest contributors to the benchmark rally, with the Nifty Financial Services index rising 4 percent. The Nifty Bank and Nifty Private Bank indices gained around 3 percent each, while the PSU Bank index also advanced by a similar magnitude.
Bajaj Finance and Shriram Finance featured among the biggest Nifty 50 gainers, rising 7.6% and 6%, respectively. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank also attracted strong buying, rising 3.2 percent and 5.3 percent, respectively.
The Nifty Capital Market index outperformed, gaining 4.24 percent. Motilal Oswal Financial Services climbed 8 percent in the broader market, while Authum Investment advanced 10.4 percent.
Renewed foreign investor participation provided an additional boost to financial stocks. Foreign portfolio investors purchased Indian equities worth Rs 7,284 crore on Wednesday, their biggest single-day investment since October 2025.
IT stocks gain as global AI trade shifts
Information technology stocks participated in the rally, with the Nifty IT index rising more than 2 percent. The sector gained even as global chip stocks and the US dollar came under pressure amid concerns over tighter scrutiny of artificial intelligence data centres. TCS rose 2.4% while Infosys jumped 3.5%.
Indian IT stocks often move inversely to global chip stocks, with the shift in global investment positioning providing support to domestic technology shares.
The global technology trade has been undergoing a rotation, with investors reassessing the pace of AI infrastructure spending and its implications for chipmakers and data centre operators.
Realty, consumer durables advance
Real estate stocks also witnessed broad-based buying, with the Nifty Realty index climbing around 3 percent. The rally in interest-rate-sensitive stocks reflected improving risk appetite and expectations that lower crude prices could help moderate inflationary pressures.
The Nifty Consumer Durables index gained more than 2 percent, while buying also extended to other rate-sensitive segments. Among consumer durables, jeweller Titan Company rose 1.7% while Kalyan Jewellers India climbed 5.8% ahead of Dhanteras on Friday, which seen as auspicious for buying jewellery. LG Electronics India rose 5% as profit rose 26% and the firm eyed entering the vehicle solutions business.
Oil-sensitive stocks gain; energy producers lag
Paint manufacturers, airlines and other businesses with significant exposure to crude-derived inputs benefited from the sharp decline in international oil prices.
Asian Paints gained 4.4 percent, while airline IndiGo advanced 5.4 percent. Lower crude prices could ease input costs for paint manufacturers and reduce fuel expenses for airlines.
However, upstream oil producers moved in the opposite direction. ONGC declined 2.13 percent, while Oil India fell around 4 percent as lower crude prices weighed on sentiment towards exploration and production companies.
The Nifty Energy index ended 0.3 percent lower, while the Media index was the other major sectoral laggard, declining 0.8 percent.
Defence stocks remain mixed
The broader market rally did not translate into uniform gains across defence-related stocks. Bharat Forge declined 3.3 percent after flagging weak overseas business, while defence counters such as Garden Reach Shipbuilders (down 0.3%), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (up 0.6%) and Bharat Electronics (down 0.7%) saw mixed trading during the session.
Overall, the sharp decline in crude prices, improving foreign fund flows and a more favourable global risk environment helped sustain buying interest across most domestic sectors.
