Mumbai, October 19: Petrol and diesel prices today, October 19, remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities, with only a marginal 3-paise reduction in petrol prices in Chandigarh. Petrol costs Rs 102.12 per litre in Delhi, Rs 111.21 in Mumbai and Rs 113.51 in Kolkata, while diesel is priced at Rs 95.20 per litre in Delhi, Rs 97.83 in Mumbai and Rs 99.82 in Kolkata.

Oil prices declined on Monday, October 19, after US President Donald Trump waived sanctions and tariffs on Russia, raising the prospect of increased Russian fuel exports and easing concerns over global supply. Brent crude futures fell 1.9% to $107.8 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped 1% to $100.4 per barrel.

Trump signed an executive order on Friday waiving key sanctions and tariffs under the Graham Act, which was introduced to pressure Moscow over its war in Ukraine. However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the administration could take up to 60 days to assess the economic impact of the move, leaving uncertainty over the extent and duration of the relief.

The decision followed an agreement between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to facilitate Russian diesel exports to the US and other markets. Under the announced arrangement, shipments are expected to begin at around 2.3 million barrels this month before rising to approximately 7.6 million barrels a month. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy criticised the US move, saying it would hurt Ukraine.

The decline in crude prices was limited by continuing geopolitical risks in West Asia. Brent briefly touched $110 per barrel on Friday, its highest level since May, amid concerns over shipping security and disruptions to global energy supplies. Data from analytics firm Kpler showed that crude flows through the Gulf fell to an average of about 8.5 million barrels per day last week, down sharply from more than 20 million barrels per day in the previous week. At least 10 confirmed incidents involving commercial vessels were reported during the period.

For India, a sustained decline in crude oil prices could provide relief by easing the import bill, inflationary pressures and pressure on the rupee. However, persistent supply disruptions and uncertainty surrounding the implementation of US sanctions policy could keep prices volatile. Investors will monitor developments in West Asia and the outlook for Russian fuel exports for further direction.
