Mumbai, October 14: IDBI Bank, Vedanta Power, PC Jeweller and Vodafone Idea were the most actively traded stocks by volume on the NSE on Wednesday, with sharp moves in the first two contrasting with declines in the latter two. IDBI Bank gained 8.23% amid continued interest in its proposed privatisation and September-quarter business growth, while Vedanta Power rose 9.15%, rebounding after five consecutive sessions of losses. PC Jeweller slipped 1.49% despite recent improvements in revenue and debt reduction, while Vodafone Idea was nearly flat, down 0.08%, as investors weighed its network performance against Reliance Jio and its expansion into enterprise connectivity.
PC Jeweller Limited (down 1.49%)
PC Jeweller shares extended their decline on Wednesday, despite a string of positive business developments. The jewellery retailer reported a 28% year-on-year increase in consolidated revenue for the September quarter last week, signalling sustained demand.
The company also recovered around Rs 142 crore in outstanding export receivables during the quarter, marking the initial collections following negotiations and resolution of the matter.
In another significant development, PC Jeweller recently repaid all its outsta
nding bank borrowings ahead of schedule, becoming debt-free. The move is expected to reduce interest expenses and strengthen its balance sheet.
The latest updates follow a strong June quarter, when PC Jeweller’s consolidated net profit rose 37.2% year-on-year to Rs 222 crore, while revenue from operations increased 21% to Rs 877 crore. The company also raised Rs 500 crore through a preferential share issue in September, bolstering its capital base.
Vodafone Idea Limited (down 0.08%)
Vodafone Idea shares were little changed on Wednesday after gaining in the previous session following a Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) report that highlighted the telecom operator’s stronger performance than Reliance Jio on several voice-quality and network-coverage parameters in New Delhi and Central Delhi.
TRAI’s August drive test recorded 11 instances of call silence lasting more than three seconds on Vodafone Idea’s network, compared with 46 for Jio. Vi also reported fewer poor-signal samples. However, Jio maintained a significant lead in download speeds, averaging 287.91 Mbps against Vi’s 39.57 Mbps.
The stock’s recent movement comes amid developments in the company’s enterprise business. Last week saw news of a multi-year private network contract between enterprise arm, Vi Business, and Hindalco Industries.
Under the agreement, Vi Business will deploy a dedicated private network at Hindalco’s Baphlimali bauxite mine in Odisha’s Rayagada district. The installation will be Hindalco’s first such deployment, with Vodafone Idea providing an end-to-end solution covering spectrum, core network infrastructure, radio access network (RAN) and managed services.
Hindalco plans to use the network to improve worker safety, fleet management, drone and CCTV surveillance, real-time monitoring and operational efficiency. An Integrated Command and Control Centre will enable centralised monitoring of mining operations, supporting faster responses and data-driven decisions.
The contract highlights Vodafone Idea’s efforts to expand beyond consumer mobility and tap industrial demand for secure connectivity. Private networks can support automation, connected equipment and real-time data transmission, potentially creating an additional revenue stream as the telecom operator works to strengthen its financial position.
IDBI Bank Limited (up 8.23%)
IDBI Bank shares surged on Wednesday, amid continued investor focus on the bank’s privatisation process and strong growth in its July-September business update. The government plans to sell a 30.48% stake in IDBI Bank, while Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) intends to divest another 30.24%. Fairfax had reportedly emerged as the frontrunner for the combined stake, with its reported offer of around Rs 81 per share valuing the transaction at roughly Rs 53,000 crore. Separately, IDBI Bank had reported an 18% year-on-year increase in total business to Rs 6.27 lakh crore in the second quarter of FY27, while deposits rose 17% to Rs 3.56 lakh crore and net advances grew 18% to Rs 2.72 lakh crore. Its current account and savings account (CASA) deposits increased 12% to Rs 1.56 lakh crore. Investors will now track the bank’s upcoming Q2 results alongside developments in the stake sale. Across the banking sector, a broker expects net interest margins to contract by 5-20 basis points quarter-on-quarter, particularly at private banks, amid FCNR-B inflows and subdued CASA growth. Rising bond yields could also weigh on treasury income, although benign credit costs and operating expenses growing more slowly than balance sheets may offer some support.
Vedanta Power Limited (up 9.15%)
Vedanta Power shares surged on Wednesday, rebounding after five consecutive sessions of losses. The rebound has put the spotlight back on the stock’s technical indicators and whether the recovery can sustain itself after a prolonged decline. Despite Wednesday’s rally, investors remain watchful of the stock’s ability to establish a durable uptrend, with technical levels and follow-through buying likely to determine its near-term direction. A single-session surge, particularly after a sustained losing streak, does not necessarily signal a reversal in the broader trend. Traders will therefore track whether Vedanta Power can hold on to its gains and move past key resistance levels, or whether the rally attracts fresh selling.
