Mumbai, October 21: Petrol and diesel prices today, October 21, remained unchanged across major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru. Petrol was priced at Rs 102.12 per litre in Delhi and Rs 111.21 in Mumbai, while diesel rates stood at Rs 95.20 and Rs 97.83 per litre, respectively.
Crude oil prices rose on Wednesday, October 21, as escalating tensions in the Middle East heightened concerns over potential disruptions to energy supplies and shipping routes. Brent crude futures gained 1.4% to $110.4 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude advanced the same to $99.2 a barrel.
Supply concerns have intensified following reports of attacks on commercial vessels in the region. A supertanker caught fire after reportedly striking a sea mine south of the Strait of Hormuz, while shipping data firm Kpler reported at least 18 vessel attacks over a two-week period. Analysts have also warned that attacks extending towards the Gulf of Oman could threaten oil loadings and shipping operations beyond the Persian Gulf.
The conflict has also raised concerns over Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure. Yemen’s Houthi group claimed responsibility for attacks on a Saudi Aramco facility in Yanbu and the Shaybah oilfield, alongside strikes targeting airports in Riyadh and Abha. These developments have sustained a geopolitical risk premium in crude prices, despite a decline in the previous session following discussions on possible diplomatic mediation between Iran and regional parties.
Brent crude had settled 0.69% lower at $108.79 a barrel on Tuesday after touching a five-month high of $111.99. The November WTI contract, which expired on Tuesday, ended 1.8% lower at $101.79 a barrel. Meanwhile, US officials are working with refiners globally to increase fuel production amid a diesel shortage, while market participants are watching for US inventory data. Analysts polled by Reuters expected US crude stockpiles to have declined by around 800,000 barrels in the week ended October 16.
For India, persistently high crude prices pose a risk to inflation, the import bill and the rupee, given the country’s dependence on imported oil. Higher energy costs can also squeeze corporate margins and weigh on investor sentiment towards oil-sensitive sectors, keeping crude price movements firmly on the domestic market’s radar.
