Mumbai, November 2: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities on Monday, November 2, with New Delhi retailing petrol at Rs 102.12 per litre and diesel at Rs 95.20 per litre. While fuel rates were steady in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, Noida and Bengaluru recorded marginal increases in both fuels. Bhubaneswar and Patna, meanwhile, witnessed reductions in retail fuel prices.
Oil marketing companies (OMCs) have increased the price of commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by Rs 10 per 19-kg cylinder and raised aviation turbine fuel (ATF) rates by Rs 1.37 per litre from November 1, adding to fuel costs for businesses and airlines amid elevated international energy prices.
Following the latest revision, a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder now costs Rs 2,820 in Delhi, compared with Rs 2,810 previously. ATF prices have climbed to Rs 138.50 per litre from Rs 137.12 per litre.
Crude oil prices declined in early Asian trade on Monday, November 2, as investors assessed the prospects of a diplomatic resolution to the US-Israeli war on Iran following another round of discussions between Iranian and Qatari officials. Brent crude futures fell 2.9% to $110.2 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined 3% to $101 per barrel.
The decline came after Iranian and Qatari officials held their third consecutive day of talks aimed at facilitating an agreement to end the conflict. The diplomatic engagement has raised hopes of easing geopolitical tensions and reducing the threat of further disruptions to crude supplies from the Middle East.
However, the decline in oil prices followed a strong rally last week, with Brent settling at its highest level in six months at the end of October. Investors remain concerned that tensions between Washington and Tehran could intensify following Tuesday’s US midterm elections, potentially pushing Brent crude towards $120 per barrel.
An analyst described the latest decline as a technical correction following last week’s gains. Hopes of diplomatic progress and the absence of any significant military escalation over the weekend have temporarily eased concerns in the oil market.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Sunday that the ongoing discussions were aimed at continuing consultations with Qatari mediators, adding that Tehran remained prepared for both defence and diplomacy. Meanwhile, attacks on oil tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuz continue to threaten energy supplies and drive up global shipping costs.
Separately, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, collectively known as OPEC+, decided to maintain December production targets at existing levels. The decision was broadly in line with market expectations, with the group indicating that further adjustments to production policy were unlikely before next year amid export disruptions linked to the Iran conflict.
For oil-importing economies such as India, a sustained correction in crude prices could help ease imported inflationary pressures, support the rupee and improve cost visibility for sectors dependent on petroleum products. However, continued uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict and the security of shipments through the Strait of Hormuz remains a significant risk to the global energy outlook.
