Mumbai, November 5: Fuel rates remained unchanged across major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Petrol costs Rs 102.12 per litre in Delhi and Rs 111.21 in Mumbai, while diesel is priced at Rs 95.20 and Rs 97.83 per litre, respectively.

Crude oil prices extended their sharp decline on Thursday, November 5, after plunging nearly 9% in the previous session, as investors bet that the Democrats’ sweeping victory in the US midterm elections could push President Donald Trump towards ending the US-Israeli war on Iran. Brent crude futures were trading 0.7% down at $93.9 per barrel in early Asian trade after settling at $94.62 on Wednesday. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also remained under pressure, down 1.18% at $87.

Brent crude futures plunged $8.98, or 8.7%, to settle at $94.62 per barrel on Wednesday, while US WTI crude futures fell $7.97, or 8.3%, to close at $88.12 per barrel. Both benchmarks settled at their lowest levels since August 31. Brent has shed nearly 20% so far this week, putting it on course for its steepest weekly decline since April 2020.

The sell-off followed a major political setback for Trump, whose Republican Party lost control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections. Investors believe a Democratic-controlled Congress could constrain the administration’s military options and increase pressure on the president to seek a negotiated settlement with Iran rather than escalate the conflict.

Trump acknowledged on Wednesday that the war had contributed to his party’s electoral defeat, while Vice President JD Vance also attributed the Republican losses to the conflict. Markets are now reassessing the geopolitical risk premium built into crude prices amid expectations that a diplomatic breakthrough could reduce the threat of further disruptions to oil supplies.

However, the outlook remains uncertain, with the possibility of renewed military escalation continuing to pose a risk to energy markets. A sustained resolution of the conflict could push crude prices lower, easing inflationary pressures and reducing the likelihood of further interest rate increases by major central banks.

The sharp correction in crude prices has broader implications for global financial markets. Lower energy costs have supported a rally in government bonds, pushed yields lower and weakened the US dollar, while improving sentiment towards equities. The benchmark US 10-year Treasury yield declined six basis points overnight to 4.87%, while the dollar slipped to a one-month low against the euro.

For India, a major crude oil importer, the decline offers relief on the external account and inflation fronts. Cheaper oil can reduce the country’s import bill, ease pressure on the rupee and lower input costs for sectors such as aviation, paints, chemicals and oil marketing. However, the extent of the benefit will depend on how long crude prices remain subdued and whether the decline translates into lower domestic fuel and industrial costs.

Petrol Prices

Petrol prices remained unchanged across major Indian cities and state capitals on Thursday, November 5, with oil marketing companies keeping retail rates steady. In New Delhi, petrol was priced at Rs 102.12 per litre, while Mumbai continued to have one of the highest rates among the four major metros at Rs 111.21 per litre.

Among other metropolitan cities, petrol was retailing at Rs 113.51 per litre in Kolkata, Rs 107.76 in Chennai and Rs 111.68 in Bengaluru. Hyderabad recorded one of the highest prices at Rs 116.15 per litre, followed by Thiruvananthapuram at Rs 115.49 per litre.

In other cities, petrol was priced at Rs 102.97 per litre in Gurugram, Rs 101.96 in Noida, Rs 101.54 in Chandigarh and Rs 101.89 in Lucknow. Jaipur and Patna recorded rates of Rs 113.19 and Rs 113.37 per litre, respectively, while Bhubaneswar sold petrol at Rs 108.97 per litre.

The unchanged retail prices come despite volatility in international crude oil markets, with global benchmarks witnessing a sharp correction amid changing geopolitical expectations following the US midterm elections. Since India imports a significant portion of its crude oil requirements, international price movements remain an important factor influencing domestic fuel costs, although retail petrol prices do not necessarily move in tandem with daily changes in crude benchmarks.

Diesel Prices

Diesel prices remained unchanged across major Indian cities and state capitals on Thursday, November 5, with oil marketing companies maintaining existing retail rates. In New Delhi, diesel was priced at Rs 95.20 per litre, while Mumbai recorded a higher rate of Rs 97.83 per litre. Among the other major metros, diesel retailed at Rs 99.82 per litre in Kolkata, Rs 99.55 in Chennai and Rs 99.56 in Bengaluru.

Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram recorded some of the highest diesel prices at Rs 104.23 and Rs 104.40 per litre, respectively. Bhubaneswar was another city where the fuel was priced above Rs 100, at Rs 100.68 per litre.

In other cities, diesel was retailing at Rs 95.64 per litre in Gurugram, Rs 95.44 in Noida, Rs 89.47 in Chandigarh and Rs 95.36 in Lucknow. The price stood at Rs 98.25 per litre in Jaipur and Rs 99.36 in Patna.

Domestic diesel prices remained stable despite significant movements in international crude oil markets. India, which depends heavily on imports to meet its crude oil requirements, remains exposed to fluctuations in global energy prices. However, changes in international benchmarks are not necessarily reflected immediately in retail fuel rates, which are also influenced by taxes and other pricing factors.
