Mumbai, November 6: Retail fuel prices remained unchanged across major Indian cities and state capitals. Petrol was priced at Rs 102.12 per litre in Delhi and Rs 111.21 in Mumbai, while diesel rates stood at Rs 95.20 and Rs 97.83 per litre, respectively.
Oil prices rose for a second consecutive session on Friday, recovering further from a steep selloff earlier in the week as fresh attacks on oil tankers in the Middle East revived concerns over supply disruptions. However, both major crude benchmarks remained on course for weekly losses of around 12%, with expectations of a possible de-escalation of the Iran war continuing to weigh on prices.
Brent crude futures gained 2 percent to $100.3 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures advanced 1.5 percent to $91.8 per barrel. Both contracts had also settled higher in the previous session.
Despite the two-day recovery, Brent was headed for a weekly decline of around 12 percent, while WTI was set to shed approximately 12.1 percent. The losses follow a dramatic correction earlier in the week, when crude prices fell 8 percent on Wednesday alone, touching their lowest levels in two months.
The sharp decline followed the Democrats’ sweeping victory in the US midterm elections, which gave the party control of both chambers of Congress. Investors interpreted the result as potentially increasing political pressure on US President Donald Trump to pursue an end to the US-Israeli war against Iran, now in its ninth month.
The prospect of a diplomatic breakthrough raised expectations that restrictions on energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz could eventually ease, improving the outlook for global crude supplies.
However, the recovery in oil prices over the past two sessions suggests that traders remain cautious about assuming a quick resolution to the conflict.
Fresh attacks on commercial vessels in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday and Thursday have renewed concerns about the security of Middle Eastern oil shipments.
Iran reported on Thursday that three additional tankers had come under attack in the Strait of Hormuz. Data from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also indicated that incidents involving tankers remained close to record levels.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical shipping route for global energy supplies, and disruption to vessel movements through the passage could constrain crude shipments from the Middle East.
Daniel Hynes, senior commodity strategist at ANZ, said traders viewed Wednesday’s sharp selloff as excessive. He noted that Iran continued to exercise control over the Strait of Hormuz, with overall shipping flows through the passage running at less than 60 percent of capacity.
For India, which depends heavily on imported crude to meet its energy requirements, the sharp weekly decline in international oil prices offers some relief on the import bill, inflation and currency front.
However, continued uncertainty surrounding the Iran conflict and tanker movements through the Strait of Hormuz could limit further downside in crude prices. Investors will closely monitor geopolitical developments and the prospects of a diplomatic resolution for cues on the next direction of the oil market.
