Mumbai, September 7: Fuel prices remained largely steady across major Indian cities, with some markets recording notable daily changes. Petrol prices were unchanged in New Delhi and Gurgaon, while Mumbai saw a marginal increase. Diesel prices were also stable in most metros, although Chandigarh recorded a sharp decline.
Oil prices extended gains on Monday as escalating military tensions between the U.S. and Iran involving vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz raised concerns over prolonged disruptions to crude supplies from the Middle East.
Brent crude futures rose 0.54% to $96.80 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 0.7% to $92.12 a barrel. Brent had surged 7.8% last week, while WTI gained nearly 10%, after renewed hostilities between the U.S. and Iran disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for roughly a fifth of global oil supplies.
The latest escalation came after U.S. forces struck three Iranian oil tankers on Saturday, according to U.S. Central Command. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, meanwhile, said it targeted three oil tankers travelling through unauthorised routes in the Strait, along with three additional U.S. vessels elsewhere. Maritime intelligence firm Marisks described the attacks as a major escalation, noting that commercial tankers were increasingly becoming part of the economic pressure campaign.
Shipping through the Strait has already slowed significantly. Data from analytics firm Kpler showed an average of just 10 commodity ships passing through the waterway each day over the past 10 days, the lowest level since May. Iran has also said it plans to announce a restricted zone outside the Strait in the coming days, adding to concerns over the security of one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.
The supply concerns come even as OPEC+ kept its oil output policy unchanged for October, with the producer group still working on new production quotas. The conflict has also limited OPEC+’s ability to influence physical supplies, as production increases agreed by the group may not necessarily translate into additional barrels reaching global markets.
Analysts expect the standoff between Washington and Tehran to remain prolonged, potentially keeping Middle Eastern oil exports constrained through the rest of 2026. The analysts expect supply flows to recover only gradually, with a return to pre-conflict levels unlikely until late in the first quarter or early second quarter of 2027.
For India, the sustained rise in crude prices remains a key risk for financial markets. Higher oil costs can widen the country’s import bill, pressure the rupee and add to inflationary pressures, potentially complicating the outlook for interest rates and corporate earnings. Brent’s move towards $97 a barrel is therefore likely to keep Indian equities cautious, despite positive cues from Asian markets.
Here are the latest petrol and diesel rates in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Patna, Bhubaneswar and Thiruvananthapuram.
