Mumbai, September 8: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely stable across major Indian cities on Tuesday, with New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai seeing little to no movement in fuel rates. However, several state capitals and neighbouring cities recorded sharper changes, with Jaipur, Thiruvananthapuram and Lucknow among those witnessing notable price movements.
Oil prices extended gains on Tuesday as escalating U.S.-Iran tensions raised concerns that a prolonged conflict could further disrupt crude supplies from the Middle East, particularly through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Brent crude futures rose 0.4% to $97.4 a barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude climbed 1.5% to $92.9 a barrel. Brent had risen to its highest level since July 24 in the previous session as traders continued to price in a higher geopolitical risk premium.
The latest move came after Iran warned that energy infrastructure across the Gulf, including U.S. oil and gas interests, could be targeted in retaliation for further American attacks. The warning followed a series of strikes over the weekend, including U.S. attacks on Iranian oil tankers and Iranian strikes on U.S. warships.
The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as the biggest concern for oil markets. Shipping traffic through the waterway fell to just seven commodity vessels on Monday from eight a day earlier, according to Kpler data. Iran has also threatened to introduce a restricted zone in the Gulf and establish a new shipping corridor through the strait.
Analysts said the renewed escalation could keep supplies from the Persian Gulf constrained for an extended period.
Brokers raised Brent and WTI price forecasts by $5 a barrel, citing expectations that disruptions to Middle East shipping could persist into next year. The brokers now expect Brent at $85 a barrel and WTI at $80 in December 2026, while 2027 forecasts stand at $80 and $75, respectively.
Brent has remained below the $100-a-barrel mark despite the supply disruptions. Continued shipments through Hormuz, alternative export routes used by Gulf producers and higher output from non-OPEC producers have helped cushion the supply shortfall. Weakening oil demand, particularly in China, has also limited the upside in crude prices.
For oil-importing economies such as India, the sustained rise in crude prices remains a key market risk. Higher energy costs could pressure the rupee, widen the trade deficit and complicate the inflation outlook, while also weighing on corporate margins in fuel-intensive sectors. India is particularly sensitive to global crude prices because of its heavy dependence on imports.
Here are the latest petrol and diesel prices in major metro cities and state capitals.
