New Delhi, June 24: Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon confirmed that the retail sector giant is all set to source $10 billion worth of goods from India by 2027. This will include categories like toys, apparel, food, pharmaceuticals, and homeware. This announcement shall be critical for over 70000 MSMEs engaged in producing these goods and trained in business skills, digital readiness, and export potential, especially covering Tier II and III cities.
Walmart is deepening its commitment to India, with a renewed focus on sourcing and supplier development. With increased institutional support, this will also facilitate easier access for MSMEs to the Walmart-Flipkart supply chain. Walmart has similar models for the growth of small and medium-sized businesses, such as Mexico (Crece con Walmart) and the USA (Grow With Us), showcasing India as a pilot market for global MSME integration.
Growing Sourcing Footprint in India
Walmart began sourcing with limited categories from India but has seen significant growth. McMillon said the company now sees a broader and more dynamic supplier base.
“It’s grown a lot, and now we have this goal of getting to USD 10 billion a year. It’s a really big number, and together with the supplier community, we’re working to achieve that,” he said.
The retail major has already sourced over USD 30 billion worth of goods from India in the past two decades, supporting global operations in markets like the US, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the UK.
Spotlight on Walmart Vriddhi and MSME Empowerment
McMillon also spotlighted Walmart Vriddhi, India’s flagship supplier development programme. Since its launch in 2019, Walmart Vriddhi has trained more than 70,000 MSMEs, equipping them with digital tools, personalised mentorship, and access to market opportunities.
Earlier this month, Walmart announced plans to onboard another 1 lakh MSMEs to the programme over the next three years.
Through Vriddhi, Walmart is building inclusive supply chains and empowering entrepreneurs to scale sustainably. The programme’s success has led to its replication in other markets, including Mexico (Crece con Walmart) and the United States (Grow with US).
Flipkart and PhonePe Driving Digital Innovation
McMillon also praised the growth of Flipkart and PhonePe, two of Walmart’s major investments in India.
“What our teams have done to grow those businesses over the years has been inspiring,” he said, adding that they’ve become innovation powerhouses driving customer reach, seller development, and digital transformation.
He further noted that PhonePe’s financial services arm has significantly improved operational efficiency and access.
Strengthening India Ties
During his two-day India visit, McMillon engaged with local sellers trained under the Vriddhi programme and toured facilities that showcased Walmart’s initiatives in exports, digital growth, and community empowerment.
Walmart Global Sourcing, which opened its India office in Bengaluru in 2002, remains a critical pillar in the company’s long-term India strategy. Through MSME enablement, Walmart Global Sourcing targets robust export expansion and inclusive growth.
