Mumbai, November 27: Sunil Bharti Mittal’s family office-owned Indian Continent Investment Ltd (ICIL) announced that it has raised ₹7,195 crore by selling a 0.56% stake in Bharti Airtel. ICIL sold the stake in Bharti Airtel through an open market transaction yesterday. The sold stake saw strong demand from domestic and global investors.

ICIL Cuts Stake, Raises ₹7,195 Crore

According to the regulatory disclosure, ICIL sold 3.43 crore shares of Bharti Airtel yesterday through an open market transaction. It sold the shares at an average price of ₹2,097.81 per share. The total value of the transaction was ₹7,195 crore. With this, the total shareholding of ICIL in Bharti Airtel has reduced to 0.92% from the previous 1.48%. The promoter group, including Bharti Telecom Ltd and Singtel affiliates Pastel and Viridian, collectively held 50.27% in the company at the end of the September quarter.

This comes after earlier this month, Singtel sold about 0.8% stake in Bharti Airtel for ₹10,353 crore, while ICIL sold 1% stake for ₹11,227 crore in August. Furthermore, ICIL also sold a stake worth ₹8,485.11 crore in February.

Stake Sale A Part of Shareholding Strategy

ICIL communicated that the stake sale in Bharti Airtel is a part of its shareholding strategy, where it wants Bharti Telecom Ltd to have the controlling stake in Bharti Airtel. Hence, it sold the stake to ensure it does not hold a controlling stake in the company.

Shares Rise by 0.02% at ₹2,127.20

As of 9:32 AM, Bharti Airtel’s share price was up by 0.02%, or 0.40 points, and was trading at ₹2,127.20. Until now, the shares have traded within a range of ₹2,136.90 and ₹2,117.20. The traded volume stood at 2.63 lakh shares, with the company’s market cap at ₹12,75,931 crore. The shares have their 52-week high at ₹2,174.50 and their 52-week low at ₹1,551.15.

Investor Takeaway

Promoter share sales are often viewed cautiously by investors, as they may signal reduced confidence in a company’s long-term prospects. In this case, however, ICIL’s stake sale is clearly strategic. The move is aimed at maintaining Bharti Telecom Ltd’s controlling position in Bharti Airtel rather than reflecting any weakness in outlook. The promoter group continues to signal confidence in the company’s future performance. Bharti Airtel shares are currently marginally higher by 0.02%.

Meanwhile, the company’s operational performance remains strong. Revenue from operations rose 26% year-on-year to ₹52,145 crore, up from ₹41,473.3 crore in the same quarter last year.
