Mumbai, 29 August 2025: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has announced that the Indian government is developing a new set of measures that will help strengthen India’s exports. The set of measures will focus on both the exports within the domestic markets and the exports carried out in the international markets.

Minister Piyush Goyal’s announcement came at an industry event, where he assured that the government is actively working towards cushioning the negative effects of the 50% tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump. He stated, “In the days ahead, the government will be coming out with a variety of measures to support every sector, both to expand the domestic outreach and look for complementarities in other markets around the world to expand our global foray so that this year, our exports will exceed last year’s exports. This year will define our self-confidence.”

Focus on Export Sectors Hit by US Tariffs

The announcement by Piyush Goyal is a welcome step as it comes at a time when most Indian sectors are struggling with the 50% US tariffs imposed on the import of Indian goods. Labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, leather, jewellery, auto, etc. are expected to be worst hit by the tariffs.

Despite global limitations, India’s goods and services exports touched an all-time high of USD 825 billion in FY25. Now, it remains to be seen how the new set of measures provides support to Indian exports so that they can maintain their export growth trajectory for the remaining year.

The forthcoming measures are expected to provide a crucial boost to exporters navigating both domestic challenges and international trade uncertainties.
