Kolkata, Jun 11 — India’s year-on-year tea exports rose by 9.92%in calendar year 2024 to 254.67 million kilograms, up from 231.69 million kilograms in 2023, as per the latest figures released by the Tea Board of India. The growth comes amid higher production across key regions, although early 2025 data reveals contrasting regional trends.
North Indian estates, comprising major tea-producing states such as Assam and West Bengal continued to dominate, supported by favourable agro-climatic conditions and improved leaf quality.
Q1 2025: North Up, South Slides
For the first quarter of calendar 2025 (January–March), provisional data showed marginal all-India production growth but significant divergence between North and South:
| Region | Jan–Mar 2025 (mn kg) | Jan–Mar 2024 (mn kg) | YoY Change (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| North India | 45.35 | 39.65 | +14.38% |
| South India | 23.87 | 27.88 | -14.38% |
| Total | 69.22 | 67.53 | +2.5% |
North India’s strong performance in Q1 2025 was offset by weather-related challenges in the South, pulling down the latter’s output sharply.
Outlook
Despite a strong close in 2024 with double-digit growth in both exports and production, India’s tea sector experienced an uneven start in 2025. The volatility underscores the impact of regional disparities as North India came out strong while South India’s output declined, putting it under pressure. Amid the mixed performance, improvement in future export volumes hinges on a swift production recovery in South India and global demand stability.
